About the African Grey

Return

There are 3 different types of african grey:

·         The Congo

With bright red tail feathers and a black beak, intelligent but also high-strung.

Distribution: Southeast Ivory Coast east to western Kenya and south to northern Angola, southern Congo and northwest Tanzania; islands of Fernando Poo and Principé; possibly isolated population in Kilimanjaro area.

·         the Timneh
Smaller than the congo with tail feathers more of a maroon-grey mixture and with a beak which includes tints of a reddish-beige color.  These birds are less high-strung and more mellow than the congo.

Distribution: Islands of Principé and Fernando Poo in the Gulf of Guinea. From Ghana or the more western regions of Africa such as the Ivory Coast and Guinea.

·         the Ghana Grey
Larger and darker than the congo and slightly smaller.

The existence of the Ghana African Grey has been questioned by many experts. The debate centers on its distinction from the Congo African Grey. Many claim that it may have at one time been a distinct breed, but interbreeding with the Congo Grey has wiped away any genetic variation between the two. Others feel that there has always been much migration between the islands and the mainland that there was probably never any distinction to begin with. Whichever the case, most claim that if the Ghana Grey was ever a distinct species, it probably is no longer today.

Distribution: Islands of Principé and Fernando Poo in the Gulf of Guinea. From Ghana or the more western regions of Africa such as the Ivory Coast and Guinea

Cage:

Cage size: the bigger the better. You'll need a large cage for these guys. Minimum in the area of 3 feet by 2 feet by 4 feet tall, but bigger is definitely better when it comes to housing parrots.

The bar spacing should be 3/4 to 1 inch (best to get 3/4 inch spacing for a Timneh).

Toys:

Provide a good selection of appropriate toys, wooden toys are very good in helping trim their beak

Sleeping:

Keeping birds up late is not healthy for them, birds need at least 10 to 12 undisturbed sleep each night
