Return
A small cockatoo can be expected to live around 40 years, larger ones can live up to 80 years or more. Their life span depends greatly on the type of food they are given and their bonding to the owner.
Cockatoos are very intelligent and demand affection imposing a great deal of time from their owner.
They are prone to neurotic behaviour which includes feather picking and self-mutilation.
They are very good speakers but can be extremely loud and with their powerful beak can destroy most of your valuable furniture.
Like most parrots their feathers release white powder which can cause severe allergies.
Cockatoo Cage
The larger the cage the better. The cage should be strong to withstand the cockatoo strong beak.
The smaller cockatoo should have a cage no smaller than 24"x26"x28" with a bar spacing of 3/4" to 1".
The large cockatoo needs a very large home about 24"x48"x48"
Toys for Cockatoo
Toys are a necessity, in particular the ones which simulate preening (to prevent the bird from overpreening) and some others for chewing (strong wooden toys).
